How to get to Glastonbury

by car, train, coach, bus and plane

Click here for alternative road routes and country lanes to Glastonbury

Glastonbury lies in the southwest of England, about 125 miles or 220km west of London (2½ hours from the M25 orbital motorway) and 28 miles or 40km (one hour) south of Bristol.

By air

Bristol airport. If you're coming from Europe, Scotland, Ireland or the North of England, this is the most convenient - especially if a friend can pick you up. If flying long-haul from outside Europe, catch a plane to Amsterdam, Brussels or Dublin, then another to Bristol. There are direct Continental Airlines flights from USA (Newark NJ), to Bristol.

Bristol airport is pleasant and easy, and the drive to Glastonbury is lovely. You can hire a car or taxi or catch a lift over the green Mendip Hills to Glastonbury (27 miles/40km), or you can catch an airport bus to Bristol bus station, then a bus 376 from there to Glastonbury (see buses below).

London Heathrow airport. Heathrow is a major world airport, and the most common air route for Glastonbury. To get to Glastonbury from there you can:
• hire a car;
• take the Heathrow Express train to London Paddington and then change trains for Bristol Temple Meads or Castle Cary (see 'trains' below);
• take the RailAir bus link to Reading and catch a train from there to Bristol or Castle Cary;
• take a late-afternoon National Express coach from Heathrow straight to Glastonbury, arriving late evening.

London Gatwick airport is less convenient for Glastonbury than London Heathrow. If travelling on to Glastonbury by train you can:
• hire a car;
• catch a train to London Victoria station, then taxi or underground, then a train from London Paddington to Castle Cary or Bristol, or
• (this is easier) catch a train from Gatwick to Reading and then change trains to Castle Cary or Bristol.

London Stansted airport is less convenient than either of the above, but a lot of cheap flights arrive here. Catch a train into London, and then another train from London Paddington to Castle Cary or Bristol.

More about trains below.

By car

Twelve Hides and a few other things...

From London and Heathrow airport, Glastonbury is best reached by the M3 and A303 (much better than the M4, and it takes you past Stonehenge). Leave the A303 at Podimore roundabout, after passing Wincanton, and follow the A372 sign for Langport. Soon after take a right on the B3151 to Somerton and Street (five miles/8km). At Street, follow signs for Glastonbury.

From the Midlands and North, take the M5 southwards past Bristol and Weston-super-Mare and leave at Junction 23, due west of Glastonbury and signposted for Glastonbury. Then follow the A39 east to Glastonbury (10 miles/15km). During off-peak hours, it works fine to enter Bristol on the M32 and take the A37 to Wells, then Glastonbury.

From Devon and Cornwall, leave the M5 at junction 23 just after Bridgwater and follow signs to Glastonbury on the A39 (10 miles/15km).

Trains, buses and coaches

Trains

London Paddington to Castle Cary. No buses from this station, so a 10 mile taxi ride or a lift is needed - there are about 5-6 trains per day and it takes 1 hour 45 minutes from London. If you have a friend who can pick you up from Castle Cary, this is the quickest route.

London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads (1 hour 30 mins), then catch a 376 bus to Glastonbury (1 hour). Bristol has regular trains, allowing more flexibility.

From Wales, the Midlands, the North and Scotland, take a train to Bristol Temple Meads and bus 376 from there (see buses below).

By EuroStar from Paris, Lille or Brussels. At London Waterloo EuroStar terminus you can catch a train from Waterloo to Yeovil (South West Trains) - this is easy, but do this only if you have a Glastonbury friend who can pick you up by car at Yeovil (25km to Glastonbury). Otherwise, take a taxi or the underground from Waterloo to London Paddington station and then a train to Castle Cary or Bristol. Or catch a taxi to London Victoria coach station, then a coach to Glastonbury (see below).

For train times and tickets go to National Rail or TheTrainLine

Buses

The Bristol bus on Magdalene Street on Market Day

In Bristol, get yourself to Bristol Temple Meads train station or Bristol bus station, and take a First bus 376 (Wells, Street and Yeovil) to Glastonbury. Buses go every hour during daytime hours.

Bristol is very well connected to other parts by train and National Express coach, and by internal and European flights via Bristol airport. You can also catch local buses to Glastonbury from Taunton, Bridgwater and Yeovil.

For bus enquiries ring 0845 345 9155.

National Express coach from London

Catch a National Express coach from London Victoria bus station and Heathrow airport (Terminal 2 bus station) direct to Glastonbury. It leaves London around 5pm daily, arriving Glastonbury late evening, and on return it leaves Glastonbury around 7am, arriving London around midday. This is not a quick journey, but it's cheap and direct. For information and booking, visit the National Express website.

Magic carpet

The main alternative to all the above is to get a ride in a car with someone coming this way! Magic!
